Moments in The Arboretum

Written by Daisy Reid

I’ve been working at The Arboretum for a few months now and days go by slow, but the weeks go by fast. It’s already the middle of July! I think we all find that life, with the way it is these days, is very repetitive and slips away faster than ever before. After realizing that this month is nearly over, I have been searching for moments that slow time down to appreciate life and time itself; anything that sparks a thought, a feeling, one simply so beautiful that I count it as a ‘moment’.

One morning, I had just started my day at the J.C. Taylor Nature Centre (like I always do) and it started to rain. I sat at the tables under the umbrellas and watched everything around me turn to richer and deeper tones of green. I tend to avoid being outside in nature during a downpour (like most of us I am guessing) but at this moment I stayed outside. The Arboretum seemed transformed into a temperate rainforest before me. The smell of wet dirt combined with the sound of leaves being flooded with rain slowed time down.

I urge you all to go to The Arboretum with an umbrella when it is raining and experience the serenity of the moment just as I did. I wanted to share this moment to encourage you to find your moment that slows down time. If not rain in The Arboretum, then what?
